Frequently Asked Questions
What
is shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a safe and effective therapeutic
hands-on therapy using the thumb pressure method developed by Tokujiro
Namikoshi in Japan in the 1920's. It has been practiced throughout Japan
under their health care act since 1955. Shiatsu is the application of
soothing and comfortable pressure to various anatomical points on the
body by the thumbs, fingers and the palm of the hand.
What is the aim of
shiatsu?
To relax the nervous system and improve one's
health by stimulating the body's natural powers of recuperation. It speeds
recovery and rehabilitation after illness or accident, and reduces the
harmful effects of stress on the body without the use of drugs. Shiatsu
also cultivates mental focus and concentration naturally. Shiatsu energizes
your mind and body and prevents ailments.
Who benefits from a shiatsu treatment?
Shiatsu is a non-invasive therapy
and is beneficial for people of all ages and conditions, including the
elderly, children and pregnant women. Shiatsu is the art of balancing
the energies and strengthening vitality. It is not necessary to be ill
to experience the benefits of Shiatsu. By increasing energy levels, you
will notice reduced stress-related anxiety and tension, enhanced vitality
and stamina, improved posture, and better circulation, creating a general
feeling of well being.
We often learn to live with day to day disorders of health such as headaches,
indigestion, fatigue, stress, aches and pains, PMS, depression etc. Complaints
left for too long become ingrained and hard to live with. Regular Shiatsu
can build and strengthen the body and help it to heal itself.
How is shiatsu applied?
Shiatsu is administered to a client lying on a soft mat
of the floor, or special therapy table or chair. The length of the treatment
varies in time depending on the nature of the problem but usually takes
less than one hour. Pressure is applied to the whole body except when
there is a specific pathological condition, in which case the treatment
is localized.
